Dust Devil by Rebecca Lemon

Dust Devil by Rebecca Lemon

My masks are portraits of the various elemental life forces that populate nature, mythology, and folklore. Sometimes they also reflect my state of mind.

This piece is one of a series depicting forces of air and wind. In making this piece, I was thinking of the mischievous desert whirlwinds… this one looks pretty friendly, with not too much destruction in mind.

This stoneware mask was fired in reduction with oxides, underglazes and glaze, and is wired to

be mounted on the wall. When fired in reduction, the oxides and glazes pull oxygen from the clay body and the glaze chemicals, resulting in an almost magical transformation that is never completely predictable.

Height 6.5” x 6” Wide by 2 “ deep
